a16z: Top 1% of US AI Payers Drive 19.5% of Consumer Spend

OpenAI Anthropic Google ai-business

TL;DR

  • The top 1% of U.S. AI payers accounted for 19.5% of observed consumer spend in August 2026, more than the bottom 50% combined at 16.6%.
  • ChatGPT has roughly 3x more U.S. paid subscribers than Claude or Gemini, and a 14x lead over Claude in monthly active users.
  • 7.3% of Claude consumers pay for the $100/month Max plan, versus 1.3% for Google and 1.1% for ChatGPT at equivalent tiers.

The top 1% of U.S. consumer AI payers account for 19.5% of all observed consumer AI spend, more than the bottom 50% combined, which comes in at 16.6%. That figure anchors the seventh Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps report a16z's Olivia Moore published on October 5. These top payers run an average of $903 per month on consumer cards for AI, up 80% in the last 18 months.

Claude's share of that premium cohort is the standout number. "Claude has 7.3% of consumer payers on their most expensive individual plan, Max," Moore writes, against 1.3% for Google and 1.1% for ChatGPT at the comparable $100/month tier. Claude passed Gemini on U.S. consumer subscribers earlier this year, despite trailing both ChatGPT and Gemini in traffic.

ChatGPT is still the volume story. The report puts it at "3x more U.S. consumer paid subscribers than Claude or Gemini," with a 2.5x lead over Gemini and a 14x lead over Claude in monthly active users.

The methodology change is where the ranking shifts. For the first time the list adds a top 50 by observed U.S. consumer spending, pulled from a YipitData card panel, and 29 of the top 50 vendors by spend "do not appear anywhere on our web or mobile traffic lists." Moore describes those as desktop apps and agents inside existing messaging platforms, distribution surfaces that Similarweb and Sensor Tower cannot see. Only 11 products on the overall list are first-time entrants, the smallest tally across the seven editions.

Moore's one-line summary: "Consumer AI usage is wide, but not very deep…for almost everyone." Nearly 50% of U.S. consumers use AI, 25% daily, and 4.5% have paid subscriptions to ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude. The spend-panel ranking lands the same week Anthropic rolled out an expanded Claude Startups pricing push, a reminder that the premium-tier contest is where the money is actually tracking.
