AGI House Logged 37 Police Incidents Since 2022, NYT Reports

The Bay Area hacker house known as AGI House has been the subject of 37 incidents logged by police since 2022, according to a New York Times investigation by Kirsten Grind, most of them party-related complaints from neighbors of the mansion.

"Previously unreported police reports and court records show some Silicon Valley AI group homes became sites of sexual harassment complaints, rape allegations and resident infighting," the paper writes. More than 20 people in the AI industry told the Times that "frequent parties involving psychedelic drugs and partner-sharing helped turn networking hubs into risky living spaces."

Rooms in these houses, which shelter engineers and founders from firms including OpenAI and Anthropic, can run as much as $10,000 a month.

The most prominent of them, an eight-bedroom Spanish villa in Hillsborough, has hosted figures including Sergey Brin and Grimes. Brin was a frequent enough guest that "he once contributed $5,000 to a party fund for the launch of a 'flying car.'" That 2022 event was thrown when the house still went by NeoGenesis, the name it carried before being rebranded AGI House.

Within a year, a Hillsborough city attorney communicated to former Google Brain researcher Jeremy Nixon a list of neighborhood complaints: "There was too much noise; the sudden influxes of visiting cars screwed up street parking; social media posts were drawing unwanted attention to the sleepy suburb." Nixon and Rocky Yu, who moved into the property in December 2022, now operate rival AGI Houses, Yu in the Hillsborough villa and Nixon in a modern mansion in San Francisco's Twin Peaks. Both filed dueling trademark applications, telling Forbes they were willing to go to court over the AGI House brand.
