Altman, Huang, Cook to Attend Trump State Dinner for Xi

Three of the highest-profile American AI executives are scheduled to sit at the same White House table as Xi Jinping. Bloomberg reported that OpenAI's Sam Altman, Nvidia's Jensen Huang and Apple's Tim Cook will attend the Sept. 24 state dinner President Trump is holding for the Chinese leader in Washington.

OpenAI confirmed Altman's attendance on Wednesday through chief global affairs officer Chris Lehane in a CBS morning interview, per CNBC.

The dinner comes days after Trump publicly rejected calls from parts of the AI industry to slow the technology down. "AI taking over the World, destroying Humanity, and all other things bad, is a HOAX," Trump posted on social media Monday, framing calls for more guardrails as part of a "SICK conspiracy," CNN reports. Altman, Anthropic's Dario Amodei and SpaceXAI's Elon Musk are among the AI leaders the president has pushed back on.

Altman has floated a very different framing of the same US-China axis. He told Fortune last week that "Even if just the US and China could agree on some shared standards and testing for development of this technology, I think that'd be a wonderful accomplishment," and said he believes Trump and Xi would win the Nobel Peace Prize together if they reached such a deal.

CNN also reports that administration officials are privately weighing a separate sidelines meeting with executives from Meta, Anthropic, Google and SpaceXAI about "the future of AI and the risks that accompany it." Nothing has been finalized or scheduled. Huang's seat at the state dinner arrives a day after our coverage of a WSJ report that he, Mark Zuckerberg and Musk had lobbied Trump against a Demis Hassabis-backed AI regulator proposal.
