Anthropic Claude Tag reads full Slack channels before it speaks
TL;DR
- Claude Tag now reads a Slack channel's full conversation instead of message-by-message, which Anthropic says makes it about 30% better at judging when to speak.
- The agent picks among four actions: reply inline, open a thread for deeper work, route into an existing workstream, or stay silent, and goes dormant where it has nothing to add.
- Expanded channel context currently does not count toward Claude usage limits, but Scott White declined to guarantee that policy will persist.
Anthropic has updated Claude Tag, its Slack agent, to read a channel's full conversation before deciding whether to weigh in, rather than judging each message in isolation. Scott White, the company's head of product for enterprise, told VentureBeat the shift makes Claude "roughly 30% better" at deciding whether to jump into a conversation unprompted.
The agent now picks from four moves: reply inline, spin off deeper work in a thread, route a message into an existing workstream, or say nothing. In channels where it has nothing useful to add, it goes dormant. White framed the design constraint bluntly: "An annoying agent is worse than an unhelpful one."
White positioned the change as part of Anthropic's push into team-level, rather than personal, assistance. "Claude used to feel like your personal chief of staff," he said. "Now Claude, in the context of organizational deployment, feels like the company's chief of staff." He added that Anthropic is "now giving Claude projects to accomplish. Soon, I think, we'll give Claude its OKRs."
The expanded channel context currently does not count against Claude usage limits, though White declined to guarantee that would stay true. Anthropic pitched the timing against an uneven adoption backdrop: McKinsey found 88% of organizations use AI in at least one function and 62% are experimenting with agents, yet only 39% attribute any earnings impact to AI. It sits alongside a run of Anthropic launches we've tracked in recent weeks.
