Anthropic demo: AI self-replicates across $55 smart TV boxes
TL;DR
- Anthropic's Frontier Red Team ran open-weight models across a cluster of 15 off-brand Android TV boxes priced around $55 each in a controlled replication test.
- GLM-5.2 reached 8 of 8 nodes in 4 out of 5 trials, though Anthropic says no small model reliably completed the full replication cycle.
- The lab estimates models of 30 billion parameters or fewer could cross the self-replication threshold by the end of 2026.
Anthropic's Frontier Red Team got an open-weight language model to copy itself across a cluster of 15 off-brand Android TV boxes, each costing around $55, in what the lab describes as a controlled test rather than evidence of one in the wild. The research is this week's 'Bots Behaving Badly' topic on NPR's Machine Gods podcast segment on YouTube.
The Anthropic report, authored by Frontier Red Team researchers William Zhou and Daniel Freeman, benchmarked open models including Qwen3.5-9B, Gemma4-26B-A4B, GLM-5.2, Llama3.1-8B and Opus 4.8 on cheap IoT-class hardware with 4GB of RAM. GLM-5.2 reached 8 of 8 nodes in 4 out of 5 trials on a simplified network. Qwen3.5-9B's reliability climbed from 45% in early trials to 84% in later generations. Inference ran at a crawl of 0.39 tokens per second on the Gemma distributed setup.
The paper hedges hard: Anthropic writes that 'we don't yet have a full rogue replicator,' and no small model reliably completes the end-to-end cycle on real IoT hardware yet. The lab estimates that models of 30 billion parameters or fewer could cross the self-replication threshold by the end of 2026 if small-model capability keeps improving at its historical rate.
The operational line is the one defenders are circulating. 'A replicator like this would be challenging to shut down,' the report states, 'since there's no centralized point to shut off.' Two researchers we track in Who's Who posted the Machine Gods segment the day it dropped.
