Anthropic folds Claude Cowork into main Claude chat

Anthropic is folding Claude Cowork into the main Claude chat, the company said in a September 16 post. "Starting today, Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude," the announcement reads, with the change rolling out to Pro and Max plans "over the next few weeks" and Team and Free plans to follow.

Three product surfaces arrive with the merger. Claude Docs and Claude Slides launched in beta on paid plans, and Claude Design "now works inside your conversations too." Users can ask for a document or a presentation from chat, edit it in place, present from Claude, or download it as PowerPoint or PDF. Enterprise admins choose when to turn the new surfaces on.

Anthropic's stated reason for collapsing the products is friction. "People used both, and told us the frustrating part was deciding where a task belonged." Existing Cowork material — "your chats, projects, artifacts, connectors, and skills" — carries over.

Control still sits with the user by default. "By default, Claude asks before taking an action. If you'd rather let it keep working and check in only when something needs a closer look, you can turn that on." The post's one named testimonial comes from Andrew Keller, a Senior Economist: "I could have Claude pull up [my legal research database], and it would pull all the cases, read them, figure out which other cases I might need, download them, and store them in a folder for my personal review."
