Anthropic launches Claude for Teachers, free through June 2027

Anthropic just handed every verified US K-12 teacher a free year of its paid Claude tier, and the interesting question is not the giveaway, it is what the company is buying with it. 9to5Mac reports that Claude for Teachers bundles Claude Cowork and Claude Code with a Learning Commons connector and a set of teaching skills that were, in the company's wording, evaluated to ensure 'rigor, pedagogical alignment, and classroom usability' and refined through early feedback from classroom teachers, including those at Prospect Schools in Brooklyn. Enrollment is open through June 30, 2027.

The thing being given away is not a stripped-down demo. According to the coverage, the offering normally costs $20 per month and gives teachers Anthropic's most capable model, Claude Opus 4.6, higher usage limits, and unlimited 'Projects' for persistent context. On the compliance side, training is off by default for every verified educator account, and educator accounts include FERPA-aligned terms and a defined SLA for deleting conversations that contain student data.

The reason to hand this out for free is the shape of the market underneath it. The classroom is a distribution channel every major lab now wants, and the teacher is the pivot: the person who picks the tool students learn on, and the person a district asks before signing a real contract. Anthropic said in the same announcement that it is 'working on a dedicated offering for schools and districts', which is the tell. Year one is teacher adoption. Year two is the enterprise sale into the same buildings.

The honest caveat is that the reporting does not spell out the verification mechanism, the exact usage caps beyond 'higher', or what teacher accounts convert to after June 2027. Nor is it clear how cleanly the Learning Commons library, which the announcement says maps to academic standards across all 50 states and pulls in curricular resources like OpenSciEd and IM v.360 from Illustrative Mathematics, will slot into the curricula districts have already bought.

For teachers themselves the read is simpler. If the FERPA posture holds up in practice, this is real premium capability at zero cost for a full school year, from a lab that has spent more airtime than most on classroom-shaped skills.
