Anthropic Licenses AP Election Data in First Publisher Deal
TL;DR
- Anthropic paid the Associated Press for real-time, attributed election data in what is its first content licensing agreement with any digital news publisher.
- Neither company disclosed financial terms, duration, or whether the arrangement covers anything beyond election output; Adweek cited two people familiar with the matter.
- The move reverses Anthropic's fair-use posture and lands as the company prepares to go public, while OpenAI has already signed more than a dozen publisher deals.
Anthropic paid the Associated Press for real-time, attributed election data that Claude surfaced through the US midterms, its first content licensing agreement with any digital news publisher, Adweek reported, citing two people familiar with the matter. Neither company disclosed financial terms, duration, or whether the deal covers anything beyond election output.
The company had announced earlier this fall that "Claude will begin showing up-to-date results on election night and in the days that follow." Neither Anthropic nor the AP commented on the record for the Adweek report.
Reporter Mark Stenberg frames the reversal as pragmatic: "an information index without access to up-to-date data is dramatically limited in its utility," he writes, with publishers' crawler blocks amounting to "effectively a digital embargo" that eventually forced Anthropic to the table. Until now the company had treated scraping as fair use and declined the licensing negotiations OpenAI and Google pursued.
OpenAI has signed more than a dozen publisher agreements, and the AP was the first publisher to license content to both Google and OpenAI as well. Anthropic, which we have logged in 362 stories over the last 90 days, is preparing to go public within weeks, which makes the strategic shift the kind of pre-IPO signal diligence teams will pick over.
Whether this is a narrow election-window patch or the first step of a broader publisher strategy is unresolved. Adweek notes that one deal does not necessarily indicate a wholesale reversal.
