Anthropic Pays $3.4B for OnePWR's 1.7GW Generator Order

TL;DR

  • At roughly $2,000 per kilowatt, the deal prices the premium labs now pay to skip Caterpillar's multi-year manufacturing queue over placing a new order.
  • Anthropic originally planned to buy electricity from OnePWR; it pivoted to owning the equipment, shifting from power customer to infrastructure operator.
  • Neither Anthropic nor OnePWR has publicly confirmed the deal; Reuters said it could not immediately verify the Financial Times report.

Anthropic paid roughly $3.4 billion for 1.7 gigawatts of Caterpillar gas generators that someone else had ordered first.

According to the Financial Times, via CNBC, the AI lab signed the deal in late September with OnePWR Solutions, a San Antonio equipment supplier. OnePWR had placed the Caterpillar orders about two years ago but needed money to complete the purchase. Anthropic was originally going to be OnePWR's customer, buying the power from it. Instead, it took over the whole queue position.

The $3.4 billion buys the generators plus "the engineering and construction capabilities required to install" them. It does not buy OnePWR itself, and none of the supplier's staff moved to Anthropic. Piper Sandler, which served as OnePWR's exclusive financial adviser, describes the September transaction as the sale of its "power-generation platform" to a "frontier AI lab," without naming the buyer.

The FT calls it the largest known single purchase of power-generation equipment by an AI lab.

The problem the deal solves is prosaic. "Demand for gas turbines and large generators has outrun factory capacity as AI developers race to build data centres, and fresh orders now face long manufacturing waits." Paying $3.4 billion to inherit a two-year-old order is faster than placing a new one.

Context for the price tag: investors discussing Anthropic's upcoming IPO have recently been pricing the company in a $1.2 trillion to $1.3 trillion range, down from the $2 trillion talk circulating earlier in the autumn. The generator deal is one of 471 stories our AI infrastructure tracker has logged in the last 90 days, and it is now the biggest line item in that pile.
