Anthropic renames Max 20x to Ultra, scraps 5-hour cap for verified
TL;DR
- Max 5x is now simply Max at $100/month; Max 20x is now Ultra at $200/month, with no price change.
- Anthropic is removing the rolling 5-hour usage window for verified Ultra accounts, starting today with most existing subscribers.
- Weekly limits are unchanged, and new Ultra accounts keep a temporary 5-hour cap until verification clears.
Anthropic renamed its two highest Claude subscription tiers on Friday and lifted the usage window heavy users complain about most. In a post on X relayed by Techmeme, the company said 'Max 5x' is now simply 'Max' at $100 a month and 'Max 20x' is now 'Ultra' at $200 a month, with no price change at either tier.
The substantive move sits inside Ultra. "We're also removing the 5-hour limit for verified Ultra accounts, starting today with most existing subscribers," the company wrote, keeping the rolling cap in place for newer accounts until verification clears. The weekly ceiling, set at ten times the Pro plan's allowance, is untouched.
"If you're a subscriber, there's nothing you need to do," Anthropic said. Writeups of the change describe the lingering restriction on unverified accounts as a fraud prevention measure against resold or shared seats, so verification, not price, becomes the gate to Claude's uncapped tier.
