Anthropic Restricts Claude Use in Live Interviews, Take-Homes

TL;DR

  • Anthropic tells job candidates to write first drafts themselves before using Claude to refine resumes and application materials.
  • Take-home assessments and live interviews are off-limits to AI unless the assessment instructions or an interviewer says otherwise.
  • Anthropic says it uses Claude internally for job descriptions and sourcing but does not let Claude make hiring decisions.

Anthropic has published a stage-by-stage guide telling job candidates when they can lean on Claude and when they must set it aside, in new hiring guidance on the company's own site. The core line, in Anthropic's words: "Use AI to refine your ideas, not replace them. We want to see your actual experience and how you think—not AI-generated responses."

Applications and interview prep are treated as fair game. Candidates are told to write a first draft themselves and then bring Claude in to polish it, and the company encourages using the model to research Anthropic, practice answers, and formulate questions for interviewers. The line hardens at assessments. For take-homes: "Complete these without Claude unless we indicate otherwise." For live interviews: "no AI assistance unless we indicate otherwise."

The guidance also lists what Anthropic itself uses Claude for internally: job descriptions, interview questions, communications, and candidate sourcing. It then draws a limit at the outcome, saying "We don't use your data to train Claude or let Claude make hiring decisions."
