Anthropic's Tom Brown Lands $1.25B/Month SpaceX Compute Deal

Anthropic's confidential IPO prospectus, dated around September 29, 2026, commits the AI lab to paying up to $84.5 billion to Elon Musk's xAI for compute capacity through 2029, with monthly payments running to roughly $1.25 billion and the contract extending until May 2029.

The architect is Tom Brown, Anthropic's cofounder and chief compute officer. The Wall Street Journal describes Brown as 'a Republican who runs the company's compute deals' and the lab's main go-between with the Trump administration and Musk, as Anthropic heads toward an IPO reportedly aimed above a $2 trillion valuation.

In March, Brown met Musk at SpaceX and argued Anthropic was less 'woke' than Musk thought, a conversation that preceded the compute pact.

Brown also handled the political fire. In June the White House made Anthropic shut off two of its models. Per the Journal, 'Brown ended the weeks-long standoff that Dario Amodei couldn't,' by convincing officials at the Commerce Department, the Pentagon and the White House that the company had tightened its safeguards.

Capacity sits at Colossus 1, the Memphis data center housing about 220,000 Nvidia GPUs, Data Center Dynamics reported. Brown himself signaled the expansion on X in June, writing that the company was 'scaling up on Nvidia GB200 capacity in Colossus 2 throughout June.'
