Apple Watch Series 12 Adds Ambient-Listening Siri Recap

Apple's new Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 will ship with Siri Recap, a feature that listens to nearby conversations through the day and produces summary notes in the Siri app. A PCMag opinion column framed the feature as a mass surveillance concern in the wake of Apple's Surprise and Shine event on September 9, 2026.

Siri Recap sits alongside two related audio capabilities Apple announced the same day: Live Rewind, which lets a wearer double-press the Digital Crown to review the previous 15 seconds of a conversation, and a sound-recognition mode that flags sirens, alarms, doorbells and crying babies. According to TechCrunch, "the features don't store recordings and that raw audio is inaccessible," Siri Recap does not identify individual speakers, and Live Rewind recaps are end-to-end encrypted.

The mechanic driving the criticism is that although the raw audio is discarded, a text summary of what nearby people said is retained. AppleInsider described the pipeline as one where the watch "gathers necessary datapoints for the summary live and discards everything on the go." Users can keep Siri Recap running continuously, put it on a schedule, restrict it to specific locations, or turn it off. TechCrunch compared the tool to third-party notetakers "like Granola and Circleback, which also have Apple Watch apps."
