Bill Gross is giving away 1.2 million startup ideas, free, on a new site called Idealab.ai. The platform, as Axios reports, analyzed more than 17 million sources, including news articles, research papers, patents and company filings, and ran them through 31 methods Gross says he has used to spot opportunities.
"With Idealab, I could do 10 companies at once; now, I could do 10,000 at once," Gross told the outlet. He framed it bigger elsewhere: "This is the biggest thing I could do to have the most positive impact on the world." The stated target is 1 million new businesses and 100 million new jobs.
Each idea comes with a short brief: potential customers, competitors, initial steps, and reasons the venture could fail. Users filter by field, geography, market size, required capital, team size and degree of automation. The site also ships a "Periodic Table of Business Functions" covering 118 jobs involved in running a company, plus a patent search filterable by institution; one view surfaces 9,978 Caltech patents and 21,000 from 3M.
The first announced partner is Cloudflare, whose CEO Matthew Prince has committed $100,000 in credits to each startup launched through the platform and whose stack contributes 12 functions to the periodic table. Prince said the setup is a way of "helping match talented entrepreneurs with vetted business ideas matched to their skill sets." Cloudflare has been busy on the enterprise-AI side this month too; our tracker caught its Clairic preview yesterday.
Gross founded the original Idealab in 1996 and has produced more than 175 companies, including GoTo.com and Citysearch. He credits recent model progress for making this pitch viable at all. "Six months ago, this wouldn't have worked," he said. "Now, by giving it my 31 methods, it comes up with new stuff that's so good, it's incredible."
