SoftBank Weighs $18B Allied Universal Buy to Deploy AI Robots

Robotics Agents Funding ai-business

TL;DR

  • SoftBank is in preliminary talks to acquire Allied Universal, the largest US security services firm, at an equity value of up to $18 billion.
  • Including roughly $12 billion of Allied's publicly traded debt, the total transaction value could land close to $30 billion.
  • Masayoshi Son wants to use Allied's labor-heavy guard operations as a deployment ground for AI-powered robots from SoftBank's portfolio.

SoftBank Group is in preliminary talks to acquire Allied Universal, the largest security services company in the United States, at an equity valuation of as much as $18 billion, Bloomberg reported on October 16. Including Allied's roughly $12 billion in publicly traded debt, the total transaction value could land close to $30 billion. Discussions remain preliminary, and no final decisions have been made on a deal or its price.

The strategic logic, as Bloomberg's reporting frames it, is to move Masayoshi Son's AI investments "beyond software and data centers and into physical-world operations." Allied provides security personnel for businesses, events and infrastructure, including New York City's subway system through contracts with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and the firm is expanding work tied to data centers, including helping build and run them. Son has identified security as a promising deployment ground for robots from SoftBank's portfolio, with fleets of robots potentially replacing human guards at one-off events such as concerts once the economics work.

Markets took it badly for the acquirer. SoftBank's US-listed shares (SFTBY) fell about 9.5% on October 16 as the Bloomberg story circulated, including via Techmeme's aggregation. Services firms rarely trade at tech multiples, and Allied's labor-heavy base sits awkwardly against SoftBank's recent AI-infrastructure spending; this is the latest entry in a crowded week of large SoftBank-adjacent capital stories on our funding tracker.
