Brad Lightcap Leaves OpenAI After Eight Years to Start Venture

Brad Lightcap, one of OpenAI's longest-tenured executives, told employees on Tuesday he is leaving to "start something new," ending an eight-year run at the company, according to The Information and confirmed by CNBC and Bloomberg. He joined in 2018, spent about four years as chief operating officer, and plans to stay a few more weeks before departing.

The timing matters because Lightcap had already been shifted out of the operating chief seat in April, when OpenAI moved commercial responsibilities to Denise Dresser, the former Slack CEO who had recently joined as chief revenue officer, and put Lightcap on "special projects" reporting directly to Sam Altman. So this is the second shoe: what read as a soft transition four months ago has now completed as a full exit.

It also lands in the middle of a wider reshaping at OpenAI. Applications chief Fidji Simo went on medical leave earlier this year, Greg Brockman temporarily moved back toward product, and Lightcap's departure is at least the third OpenAI story in our tracker today, alongside a new power-trader hire and an ethics-lead exit. Losing one of Altman's most-tenured operating deputies during that churn is not a small footnote for a company still building out its enterprise motion.

The reporting stops short of some things a reader would want. Lightcap did not describe his next venture beyond saying it will focus on challenges as AI enters its next phase, and none of the write-ups say who if anyone he takes with him, whether he intends to raise capital, or whether the April special-projects move was his own idea or a nudge from Altman.

For enterprise customers and investors currently mid-deal with OpenAI, the practical read is that relationship continuity now runs through Dresser, and the next name to watch is whichever operator Altman elevates to fill the vacuum on the complex deals and investments Lightcap had been running under the special-projects banner.
