Cancer scientists push back on AI CEOs' cure-timeline pitch

Cancer researchers interviewed by The Information, including some who describe themselves as AI enthusiasts, say the 'AI will cure cancer' pitch from Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis, Anthropic's Dario Amodei and OpenAI's Sam Altman is not backed by the biology.

Hassabis told 60 Minutes, "I think one day we can cure all disease with the help of AI." Amodei has said it "will actually be possible to cure most human disease in ~5-10 years." Altman has repeatedly cited curing cancer as a justification for OpenAI's push toward AGI.

Cardiologist Eric Topol, who considers himself a Hassabis 'superfan' and is one of the most visibly pro-AI voices in medicine, is having none of it. Physician-researcher Emilia Javorsky, whose March 2026 essay "How AI Can, and Can't, Cure Cancer" the reporting draws on, argues intelligence is not the binding constraint. "Biological truth cannot be computed," she writes. Cancer is heterogeneous, no equivalent to the Protein Data Bank exists for it, and more than 90% of cancer cures that look promising in mice fail when tested on humans.

Amodei himself has since walked the framing back. In a recent essay reported by The Next Web, he wrote that "at this point, saying that AI will cure cancer is more a cliché than it is inspiring, and most people think it is deceptive." Javorsky's point sharpens the concession: more than a decade in, no AI-designed drug has reached clinical adoption, and AlphaFold, the industry's showcase for AI in biology, has yet to produce an approved medicine.
