ChatGPT Health links to Epic for clinician chart access

OpenAI switched on a read-only bridge between ChatGPT and Epic's electronic health record system on September 1, giving authorised clinicians a way to pull appointment notes, lab results, medications and specialist documentation into a chat window and ask questions against them. TechCrunch reports the connection is one-way: the model can summarise a chart and flag changes since the last visit, but it cannot write anything back into Epic.

Access is gated to healthcare organisations that hold a Business Associate Agreement with OpenAI, the HIPAA construct that lets a vendor touch protected health information. In OpenAI's own numbers, physicians rated 99.1% of responses safe across 27 clinical use cases, drawn from roughly 4,300 physician evaluations. Epic's EHR footprint — more than 325 million patients — is the reason the deal matters commercially: it is the widest single distribution surface any general-purpose AI vendor has landed in US healthcare.

Alongside the Epic tie-up, OpenAI is adding a Healthcare Public Data plug-in that pulls from ClinicalTrials.gov, CMS Coverage, RxNorm, DailyMed and PubMed, aimed at trial-eligibility checks, medication lookups and coverage questions.

The clinician push arrives on the back of a bumpier consumer chapter. ChatGPT Health opened to all US consumers in July 2026, and TechCrunch notes users now send roughly 300 million health-related queries to ChatGPT every week. Two lawsuits have followed — one from a Florida pastor, one from family members — both alleging harmful medical advice. Two of the analysts we follow flagged the Epic announcement within hours, a signal the enterprise story is landing where the consumer one has been contested.

No OpenAI or Epic executive is quoted in the reporting, and no pilot health system is named.
