Chen Yixin names Claude Mythos, GPT-5.5-Cyber in AI warning

China's top intelligence official has placed artificial intelligence at the center of Beijing's national-security frame and named two specific US frontier systems as tools that could lower the cost of cyberattacks. In an article for China Cyberspace, the journal of the Cyberspace Administration of China, State Security Minister Chen Yixin called AI "a new arena for strategic rivalry among major powers," the South China Morning Post reported.

Chen singled out Anthropic's Claude Mythos and OpenAI's GPT-5.5-Cyber, casting them as next-generation US releases that increase efficiency in discovering system vulnerabilities and developing malware. He wrote that AI could be "leveraged by hostile forces" to spread rumors and destabilizing narratives, and that abusive use of AI by adversaries could "directly threaten China's political security, institutional security and ideological security."

The piece lands the same week Xi Jinping pitched a BRICS AI cooperation community at the New Delhi summit, and it fits a run of Beijing governance signaling that has kept our China AI tracker busy. Chen pairs the security case with a governance pitch: Beijing has been calling for a stronger global AI rules system while criticizing US restrictions on the technology.

Chen's article does not name any Chinese domestic model as a safer counterweight, and it carries the imprint of the internet watchdog rather than any operational directive.
