Clearview AI tests InquiryIQ, a Grok-powered profiler for cops

TL;DR

  • Clearview AI has built and tested an unreleased tool, InquiryIQ, that turns a facial-recognition hit into an automated open-web dossier.
  • The tool uses a model from Elon Musk's xAI, and its interface says adding age, gender, and race helps it make 'smarter decisions.'
  • Wired reporters discovered the unannounced tool in code Clearview's login page sends to any visitor's browser before sign-in.

Clearview AI has quietly built and tested an unreleased tool, called InquiryIQ, that takes the output of a facial-recognition match and fans out across the open web to assemble a profile of the person it names, Wired reports.

Wired describes InquiryIQ as an 'analyst assistant' that opens webpages, analyzes images, and compiles what it finds into a dossier of possible employers, aliases, associates, and physical characteristics of a person police are investigating. One of the models the company tested to power those decisions comes from Elon Musk's xAI, the company behind the Grok chatbot.

The tool's interface tells investigators that supplying age, gender, and race can help the system make 'smarter decisions' as it searches.

InquiryIQ has never been publicly announced. It surfaced after reporters found code buried in files that Clearview's login page sends to any visitor's browser before they even sign in. Two of the analysts we track had the story in circulation within hours of publication.

Clearview restricts access to its face-matching system to vetted government and law enforcement agencies, a limitation written into its 2022 settlement with the ACLU following years of litigation over its scraping practices. Neither the reporting nor any regulatory filing describes which departments, if any, have piloted InquiryIQ in live investigations.
