CNN is granting Google "enhanced content rights" to power experimental features in Google products that use generative AI, in a multi-year agreement announced on October 15 by CNN. Neither side put a dollar figure on it.
"With this partnership we're unlocking new pathways for audiences to access CNN's unparalleled journalism while being compensated for the delivery and use of our unique intellectual property in connection with AI products," said Sam Felix, CNN's Senior Vice President of Strategic Partnerships and Business Development, in the announcement. Felix also said that "Google's innovation with generative AI has changed how people discover information and content, and now those tools will help us explore new ways to discover and engage audiences."
The release does not name a single Google product that will carry CNN content, does not say whether the content can be used to train models, and does not set a launch date. CNN said it is also in discussions with other AI companies, framing the Google deal as one in a planned series rather than an exclusive. The agreement lands on top of Google's paid news AI pilot, which now spans more than 400 publishers.
