Descartes buys AI freight-broker platform Tai for $100M cash

Descartes Systems Group said it will buy Tai for about $100 million in cash, adding an AI-powered transportation management platform built specifically for freight brokers to a portfolio the Canadian logistics-software vendor has assembled through 34 acquisitions since 2017.

California-based Tai orchestrates quoting, carrier sourcing, load execution, billing and customer engagement across truckload, less-than-truckload, drayage and cross-border operations. It ships more than 500 integrations and rolled out an autonomous AI voice agent earlier this year to handle driver contact and shipment updates, per FreightWaves' coverage of the deal.

"Tai complements our strengths in carrier onboarding, compliance, fraud prevention, and real-time visibility," Descartes CEO Ed Ryan said in the announcement. Andrew Wimer, associate general manager of transportation management, framed the value in data terms: the acquisition "adds valuable transaction, carrier and shipment execution data to the Descartes Global Logistics Network."

The pace has been steady. Descartes paid $30 million for Drivin in July and $28 million for Idelic in April, and roughly $112.7 million for 3GTMS last year. Neither the Axios brief nor the press release breaks out Tai's revenue, customer count or headcount, so the multiple behind the $100 million sticker is not public.
