Dyson's $499 CameraJet toothbrush watches teeth with onboard AI

Dyson's new $499 CameraJet packs a 100,000-pixel camera under the brush head and an on-device AI that watches for the gaps between your teeth, firing a cone of water into each one as you pass by. Gizmodo describes "an AI camera that can actually judge the intervals between your teeth and shoot out water at the moment you pass the gap."

The system, which Dyson calls Gap Optical Targeting, analyses 28 live images per second and triggers a conical burst of mouthwash within 100 milliseconds of spotting a gap. The stream is a fan-shaped spray of microdroplets rather than the needle jet you get on a Waterpik. A strobing light sits alongside the camera, and the brush head mixes firmer inner bristles for stain removal with softer outer ones for the gumline.

The camera also streams to the MyDyson app, so users can watch inside their own mouth as they brush. On privacy, Dyson says the camera is "only active during live viewing or auto-jetting" and that "no images are recorded or stored on the product or in the cloud." Dyson is careful not to oversell the flossing claim, positioning the device "not as a floss replacement, but as a way for most people (many of whom don't floss regularly) to get some kind of flossing in." Traditional string floss, the company concedes, remains the gold standard. The CameraJet is open for preorder now.
