Etched Draws $40B-$50B Bids Weeks After $21B September Round
TL;DR
- Etched is fielding investment offers at $40-$50 billion, roughly double the $21 billion valuation it set in September 2026 with a Jane Street-led round.
- The four-year-old inference-chip startup said in July it had already secured $1 billion in customer orders; Jane Street is both an investor and an early customer.
- Etched employs about 400 people (roughly 15% ex-Nvidia), runs a 10-megawatt Silicon Valley data center, and coordinates production near TSMC in Taiwan.
Inference-chip startup Etched is fielding investment offers at valuations between $40 billion and $50 billion, TechCrunch reported on October 5, roughly double the $21 billion mark the four-year-old company set in September when Jane Street led a $700 million round. That September financing came only two months after Sequoia led a $300 million round at a $10.3 billion valuation in July.
The pitch underneath those numbers is a backlog. Etched "said in July that it had already secured $1 billion in customer orders," per the report, and Jane Street, which is both an investor and an early buyer, has taken delivery of a system. The company "claims its chips can process more tokens faster and at a lower cost than Nvidia's," a claim it is now trying to prove at scale from a 10-megawatt data center in Silicon Valley and a production-coordination facility near TSMC in Taiwan.
The roster behind the pitch leans heavily on Nvidia alumni: of roughly 400 employees, about 15% worked at Nvidia previously. Co-founders Gavin Uberti and Chris Zhu met in an advanced math course at Harvard, and COO Robert Wachen was Uberti's roommate; all three dropped out to start the company. TechCrunch adds that "if it raises as much as its last round, this could give Etched a cushion of as much as 3.5 years of runway."
The roughly 4x step-up in three months lands inside a run of outsized AI infrastructure financings, including the 27 billion-dollar rounds Crunchbase logged in Q3 2026. The TechCrunch piece does not name who is leading the current $40-$50 billion bids, or say whether the offers are primary or secondary.
