Gil Durán maps TESCREAL, Silicon Valley's AI ideology stack

The premise of the YouTube conversation is that Silicon Valley's most powerful AI figures are moved by a shared belief system with a clunky name. Journalist Gil Durán, author of *The Nerd Reich: Silicon Valley Fascism and the War on Democracy*, walks host Edwin Eisendrath through TESCREAL: transhumanism, extropianism, singularitarianism, cosmism, rationalism, effective altruism and longtermism.

The acronym is not Durán's. It was coined by computer scientist Timnit Gebru and philosopher Émile P. Torres, who argue the seven strands should be treated as an "interconnected and overlapping" group with shared origins in the eugenics movement. The pitch of the video is that this bundle now functions, in Durán's telling, as a secular religion inside the industry building frontier AI.

Durán's book, a New York Times bestseller, names the cast: Peter Thiel, Marc Andreessen, Balaji Srinivasan and Elon Musk. The Wikipedia entry on the book summarises the through-line as figures like Andreessen being "TESCREALists," an acronym which covers ideologies including "Longtermism," which considers the present human population as entirely expendable in the mission to save the billions of people who have yet to be born. Durán's proposed remedies are blunt: ban crypto, treat network-state proposals as anti-government extremism, break up tech monopolies, regulate AI.

The TESCREAL argument is contested. Effective-altruism-adjacent writers, including in *Asterisk Magazine*, have pushed back that the acronym lumps together movements with real internal disagreements. The video is advocacy journalism, not a neutral primer, and Durán is selling a book.
