Google Cloud's Gemini Agent Gets a Mailbox and Directory Seat
TL;DR
- Each agent receives a dedicated @agents.company.com email address, Calendar entry, Drive storage, and company directory presence, making it addressable by colleagues the same way a human teammate is.
- Smart Routing selects from multiple underlying models including Anthropic's Claude alongside Gemini, so agents are not locked to a single provider and can optimize quality and cost per task.
- The Agent Gateway ships as an enterprise AI firewall: cryptographically-attested agent identities, org-wide policy enforcement, real-time spend caps with pause and resume, and per-action audit trails.
Each Gemini "coworker agent" an enterprise sets up gets its own Workspace account: an email address, a calendar, Drive storage, and a seat in the company directory, so colleagues can delegate to it the way they would to a human teammate. Google Cloud announced the system on October 8 at its Gemini at Work event, VentureBeat reported.
"To meet this moment, today we are excited to announce the Gemini agent: your new single, universal agent for work," Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said in the company's launch post. "Work now starts in the prompt window."
The agent runs persistently in the cloud and keeps four kinds of memory: session memory "for the task in front of it, even when it runs for days," plus semantic, procedural, and episodic. It works directly inside Gmail, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Chat, and Calendar, and reaches out to Microsoft 365 and Slack from web, mobile, and desktop.
Underneath, Google says it routes jobs across its own Gemini family (Argon for frontier reasoning, Flash for speed, Omni for generative media, Gemma for lightweight edge workloads) and Anthropic's Claude today, with "other leading private and open models in the future." A Smart Routing tool picks which model handles each job, and administrators can cap a project's AI spend in the Cloud Billing Console.
Access is scoped. "A coworker agent acts under its own identity rather than yours, and it sees only what you share with it," Google writes. Pricing and a general-availability date were not announced.

Highlights Smart Routing's multi-model selection including Claude, and configurable spend thresholds that auto-suspend the agent when limits are hit.
The agent is premised on delegation: employees describe what they want accomplished, and the agent determines how to complete it and delivers the result.

Frames Workspace integration as a strategic moat against pure infrastructure providers, arguing cryptographic agent identities reshape enterprise task delegation.
Agents that natively live inside Gmail, Calendar, and Drive give Google a distribution channel that pure infrastructure providers cannot easily replicate.
