Google Backs $17B Wyoming Data Center With 702MW Fuel-Cell CCS
TL;DR
- Google is making a long-term $17 billion investment in its first Wyoming data center, located in Laramie County, with partners Tallgrass, Black Hills, AEP and Related Digital.
- The site will be powered by a 702 MW Bloom Energy fuel cell development with carbon capture piped to Tallgrass's Eastern Wyoming Sequestration Hub.
- Google expects hundreds of millions of dollars in local property taxes for Laramie County and School District 1, and will air-cool the site to limit water use.
Google said it will put $17 billion into its first Wyoming data center in Laramie County, powered by what a post from VP of global infrastructure and energy Steve Walter describes as a 702 MW fuel cell development with carbon capture, "the largest planned development of its kind to date." The fuel cells will be built in America by Bloom Energy and contracted through American Electric Power.
The CCS half of the equation runs through Tallgrass Energy, which will route captured emissions into its Eastern Wyoming Sequestration Hub. Walter wrote that the arrangement "will enable the capture and permanent geologic storage of a large majority of its carbon emissions," and that the deal "brings our total contracted CCS capacity to nearly 1 gigawatt," building on Google's first U.S. CCS project announced last fall.
The specifics on the climate side are looser than the dollar figure. The post names no completion date, no capture-rate percentage beyond "a large majority," and no cost split between Google and AEP. Google will also keep pulling power from existing gas generators operated by Tallgrass and Black Hills Energy while it runs a front-end engineering study on retrofitting Tallgrass's combined cycle turbines with CCS.
The community pitch is tighter. Google expects the project to "generate hundreds of millions of dollars in local property taxes for Laramie County and School District 1," plus targeted grants for K-12 education, STEM, and skilled trades training across the state. More than 200 Laramie County residents turned up at a Cheyenne community meeting, and Google says it and its partners are standing up a Community Council alongside Bloom, AEP, Tallgrass, Black Hills and Related Digital.
On water, Google is sidestepping the usual inland fight. Walter wrote that "our Wyoming data center will be air-cooled to minimize strain on local water resources." The announcement lands in a dense week of AI infrastructure deals we have logged 471 of in the last 90 days, but a gas-fuel-cell-plus-CCS recipe at this scale is new.
