GXO Expands Agility Digit Deployment to Two More Warehouses
TL;DR
- GXO will deploy Agility's Digit humanoids at warehouses in Statesville, North Carolina and Lebanon, Tennessee starting in early 2027, running Digit 4 before migrating to Digit 5.
- Agility says Digit has logged more than 65,000 real-world hours across commercial and customer programs, with over 100,000 totes moved at the original Flowery Branch, Georgia site.
- GXO CEO Patrick Kelleher told investors in August 2026 the company has not yet achieved ROI on humanoids and is 'a couple of years away.'
GXO Logistics will put Agility Robotics' Digit humanoid into warehouses in Statesville, North Carolina and Lebanon, Tennessee starting in early 2027, with the initial fleet running Digit 4 and migrating to Digit 5 once the newer model is commercially available, according to The Robot Report.
The expansion builds on a proof-of-concept pilot at GXO's Flowery Branch, Georgia facility that began in late 2023 and became a multi-year robots-as-a-service agreement in June 2024, which the companies describe as the first commercial robots-as-a-service (RaaS) agreement for humanoids. Agility says Digit has logged more than 65,000 hours across commercial operations and customer programs, and more than 100,000 totes have been moved at Flowery Branch.
"Customers are moving beyond asking whether humanoid robots can work to deciding where they can scale them," said Peggy Johnson, chief executive of Agility Robotics. GXO chief executive Patrick Kelleher framed the deal in similar terms: "Our partnership with Agility Robotics has been defined by a shared commitment to turning emerging technologies into real-world operational advantage."
The math is less tidy. On GXO's August 2026 earnings call, Kelleher told investors "We have not achieved ROI on humanoids yet," adding "I think we are a couple of years away from that." Asked how many of GXO's roughly 20,000 deployed robots would be humanoids this year, he answered: "In production, zero will be humanoids this year." He pointed to hand dexterity and task speed as the hardest problems still unsolved.
Neither company disclosed how many Digit units will arrive at Statesville or Lebanon, nor what the expansion is worth. The announcement joins a run of 169 robotics stories we have logged in the last 90 days on AI Weekly's robotics tracker; humanoids keep landing on real warehouse floors even when the customer paying for them says the business case has not closed yet.
