Hassabis named Alphabet chief scientist as Jeff Dean departs

Google is redrawing the org chart at the top of its AI stack, and the two names moving are the ones who actually built the modern DeepMind. In a memo from Sundar Pichai, Demis Hassabis is stepping out of day-to-day operations at Google DeepMind to become Chair of GDM and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, while continuing to lead Isomorphic Labs. Jeff Dean, after an incredible 27-year run, is leaving with Sanjay Ghemawat to launch an independent public benefit corporation, with Google as founding investor and Cloud partner.

Koray Kavukcuoglu is the person the operating job actually lands on. Pichai promoted him to SVP of Google DeepMind, reporting directly to the CEO, with responsibility for Gemini model development, frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams. Pichai's note points out that Kavukcuoglu has been at DeepMind for 13 years and helped drive work like WaveNet and DQN, so the choice reads as continuity rather than an outside hire.

The scale claims Pichai puts on the board are the ones to actually stress-test. The Gemini app is cited at 950M+ monthly users and Gemma at 900M+ downloads, and those are the numbers Google wants at the front of any conversation about reach. Take the specifics as reported rather than settled, because the memo does not break out how many of those Gemini users are logged-in daily actives versus everyone touching a Google surface, and the Gemma total is cumulative downloads, not deployed apps.

What the reporting doesn't give you is the interesting stuff about why now. There is no timing rationale for Dean's exit, no detail on the new company's mandate beyond accelerating discoveries in ML, science, and engineering, and no financial terms disclosed for Google's founding investor role. Corroborating coverage at 9to5Google adds that Oriol Vinyals is also following Dean out, which makes this less a solo departure and more a small pod of research leaders leaving with Google's blessing.

The forward-looking read is that Google is willing to trade research charisma at the top for a cleaner operating chain into products. Hassabis becomes the vision voice for AGI and the outside face of the science, while Kavukcuoglu owns shipping Gemini. If that split works, developers and enterprise buyers get a single clearer counterpart at Google. If it doesn't, the risk is that the org loses momentum on the exact stack it just told the market it is winning.
