Hassabis Steps Back as DeepMind CEO, Now Alphabet Chief Scientist

A leadership swap at Google DeepMind announced on August 5, 2026, with Demis Hassabis moving from day-to-day CEO to Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, is a bigger tell about how Google is organising for the next phase than the org-chart language suggests. Per Pichai's message to Googlers, Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously Chief Technology Officer of Google DeepMind, becomes Senior Vice President of Google DeepMind and takes over Gemini model development, frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams, reporting to Pichai. Pichai credited him with starting the deep learning team and leading breakthroughs like WaveNet and DQN across 13 years inside the organisation.

Why this reshuffle matters is spelled out in the same note: the Gemini app has passed 950 million monthly users and Gemma models have exceeded 900 million downloads. DeepMind is no longer a research lab loosely coupled to product, it is the engine room for Google's flagship AI surface, and Pichai clearly wants an operator running that engine. The same announcement also confirmed Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat leaving Google after 27 years to launch an independent public benefit corporation focused on ML, science, and engineering breakthroughs, with Google as founding investor and Cloud partner. Two of the most influential figures in Google's technical history departing on the same day as the DeepMind reshuffle is not accidental timing.

The honest caveat is that the reporting does not tell you what the Chair role actually controls versus advises, who takes over as CTO, or how safety and alignment work is split between the new Chief Scientist office and Kavukcuoglu's SVP org. Read the 'AGI is close' line as a positioning statement, not a technical claim. The part worth watching is whether an operator-led DeepMind ships Gemini faster, and whether Hassabis's freed calendar shows up as Isomorphic Labs progress or as an increasingly public Alphabet voice on AGI policy.
