JD Vance rejects AI rules, tells labs to stop 'Frankenstein'

Vice-President JD Vance told frontier AI labs that if they think they are building a monster, the answer is to stop building it, not to ask Washington for rules. The line, delivered on a recent All-In podcast appearance and reported by the Guardian: 'If you're building Frankenstein, stop.'

The rebuke was aimed squarely at Anthropic. Days earlier, co-founder Dario Amodei had published an essay titled 'We Must Pace the Frontier,' proposing that labs coordinate to slow capability gains and warning that AI agents could 'take over the entire internet' within six to 12 months.

Vance was unimpressed. 'I feel a little bit weird about the fact that you have so many frontier AI tech companies kind of coming to the company, and begging the government to regulate them,' he said. 'It feels a little bit to me like a bit of a Trojan horse.'

His prescription, in his own words: 'Look inward and accept that if you're building Frankenstein, No 1, you should stop and No 2, when companies come to you and say: "We need the tools to fight back against Frankenstein," give them those tools.'
