Keyu Tian Raises $30M at $200M for Stealth World-Models Lab
TL;DR
- Former ByteDance intern Keyu Tian has raised close to $30 million at a $200 million valuation from 5Y Capital and IDG Capital.
- The unnamed stealth lab targets world models for robotics, interactive video and autonomous driving, putting it alongside Fei-Fei Li's World Labs.
- Tian authored a NeurIPS 2024 best paper during his ByteDance internship; a court later ordered him to pay 500,000 yuan for breach of contract.
Keyu Tian's new AI lab has no name and no product. It is valued at $200 million.
Bloomberg reports the former ByteDance intern has raised close to $30 million from 5Y Capital and IDG Capital for an unnamed stealth lab building "world models," AI systems meant to simulate real-world physics and mechanics for applications in robotics, interactive video and autonomous driving. The lab currently has a team of about 10 people, including other former ByteDance employees.
"A convincing still image is different from a coherent environment that changes as a camera moves, objects interact or an agent takes an action," the reporting notes. That is the technical pitch for a field already championed by Fei-Fei Li, whose World Labs has raised roughly $1 billion and shipped its Marble model.
What is being funded here is Tian's résumé. He is the first author of a NeurIPS 2024 best paper, "Visual Autoregressive Modeling: Scalable Image Generation via Next-Scale Prediction," completed during his internship at ByteDance while he pursued a master's at Peking University. During that same 2024 internship, ByteDance accused him of disrupting model training by writing and altering code. The company filed suit seeking 8 million yuan in damages, and a court ruled that Tian must pay 500,000 yuan for breach of contract.
The lab has no public demo, no benchmark, no model release. Our funding tracker has logged 425 AI rounds in the last 90 days; pre-product marks at this level remain rare even in that run.
