Microsoft Edge Team: AI Code Surge Slows Extension Reviews

Microsoft's Edge team says the flood of AI-coded submissions has stretched its extension review pipeline. In a blog post on Tuesday, the team wrote that "Rapid adoption of AI-assisted coding is enabling developers to build extensions faster than ever," and that "submission volumes have continued to increase, and our review pipeline has experienced additional strain, causing an increase in extension review turnaround time."

It is the second Microsoft group in weeks to concede the same problem. According to The Register's Simon Sharwood, "a few weeks back we spotted Microsoft's Exchange team admitting that AI has found so many bugs it hasn't found time to deliver a Cumulative Update for the messaging server. And on Tuesday, the Microsoft Edge team revealed it's also a bit overwhelmed by AI."

The fix, for now, is more automation. Edge says it has "introduced automation for many of the repeatable validation checks that are part of the review process and streamlined how reviews move through our pipeline." It insists the bar has not moved: "This doesn't change our review standards or reduce the checks an extension must pass. Instead, it helps identify known policy violations and security issues more consistently while allowing reviewers to focus on complex cases requiring human judgment."

One concrete cadence change: the store's Featured badge, which flags high-quality extensions, will now be refreshed every 15 days.

The blog post does not disclose the current review-queue length, turnaround times, or how many submissions are demonstrably AI-generated. It is Microsoft's second public flag in weeks that AI-assisted coding is now a load problem inside the company's own review teams, against a backdrop of 153 coding-tools stories we've tracked in the last 90 days.
