MSCI China's consumer sub-indexes have fallen roughly 18% over the past six months to near 10-year lows, while the country's AI-heavy technology gauge has more than doubled its 2016 level, Bloomberg reports.
Consumer staples firms in the gauge missed profit expectations by nearly 50% last earnings season; discretionary goods producers missed by nearly 10%. August retail sales rose just 0.4%. "Data this summer has disproved that there is any recovery in spending, and affirms that it still is a one-way bet on exports," said Chen Shi, a fund manager at Shanghai Jade Stone Investment Management Co.
The valuation gap makes the split concrete. MSCI China's consumer discretionary and staples gauges trade at around 11 and 13 times their forward earnings estimates, well below 21 for the info tech index. High-profile actively managed Chinese funds with heavy consumer exposure have pivoted to AI names, and inflows into tech ETFs have increasingly eclipsed those targeting consumer products.
The reading arrives just before Golden Week, historically a crucial period for travel and household spending. Chen said authorities could rebuild consumer confidence through measures ranging from stabilizing asset prices to stronger wage growth prospects and raising minimum incomes, adding that any meaningful improvement will likely be gradual.
