Musk: xAI's Colossus 2 Aims for 1.21M Nvidia GPUs by Year-End

Elon Musk said xAI's Colossus 2 cluster near Memphis currently runs 110,000 Nvidia GB200 chips and 440,000 GB300s, and laid out a schedule that would take it past 1.2 million GPUs by the end of the year. Bloomberg reported the disclosure on September 25, drawing on a post Musk made on X.

Another 220,000 GB300s will be "fully operational next week," Musk wrote, with another 220,000 in November and, "if we get lucky, yet another 220k GB300 by late December." That schedule would take Colossus 2 to 1.21 million GB200 and GB300 processors, including 1.1 million GB300s, according to Invezz, which cited the same X thread.

Musk tied the unusual 110,000-chip step size to networking rather than chip supply, writing that it reflects "the number of fiber optic cables that can be plugged into a central switch." It is the most detailed public timetable he has given for the Memphis build, and it lands in the middle of a run of AI-infrastructure stories on our tracker, from Crusoe's cancelled Boom turbine deal to a Senate bill on Chinese optical transceivers.

The power picture is a separate question the post does not answer. Reuters reported in July that 59 natural-gas turbines had been installed on the site without federal clean-air permits, and xAI has said it is replacing that temporary generation with a 1.2-gigawatt permanent plant. Musk's December batch is conditional on his own terms.
