Natural raises $30M Series A to build payment rails for AI agents
TL;DR
- Natural closed a $30M Series A led by Forerunner Ventures, bringing total funding to $40M for the year-old startup.
- The company is building an orchestration layer letting AI agents move funds and settle payments with humans and other agents autonomously.
- Natural views Stripe as its main competitor, with DCVC-backed Skyfire Systems also pursuing agent payments via USD-backed stablecoins.
Something worth watching this week is a year-old startup called Natural pulling in a $30 million Series A led by Kirsten Green's Forerunner Ventures, as TechCrunch reported. It brings total funding to $40 million and puts the company on a direct collision course with Stripe over what payment rails for AI agents should look like.
The pitch is straightforward. Today's financial rails were built for human-initiated transactions, and Natural wants to be the orchestration layer that lets AI agents move funds, pay humans, and settle with other agents without a person authorizing each step. CEO Kahlil Lalji, who previously co-founded the YC-backed banking product Ivella and sold it to Earnin in 2023, is building this one with Eric Wang and Walt Leung, formerly an engineering manager at Nextdoor. The company has been operating in beta and says it has hired senior staff from Stripe, Ramp, and Square.
The load-bearing claim is a market size argument. Lalji told TechCrunch that 'the number of payments that may occur in the world may be two or three or four orders of magnitude greater than the number of payments that exist today.' Take that as founder framing rather than an observed number. If agent-to-agent commerce actually shows up at that scale, the incumbents' rails become the constraint. If it does not, Natural is a very well-capitalized answer to a question no one asked.
The competitive picture is the interesting part. Stripe has signaled its own agent-payments push, and DCVC-backed Skyfire Systems is already in market with a stablecoin-based approach. Natural plans to support both stablecoins and traditional banking, so it is not choosing sides on the settlement layer.
The honest caveat is what the reporting does not give you: no beta transaction volume, no named launch customers, and no detail on how the system handles authorization limits, reversibility, or disputes when the counterparty is a bot rather than a person. Those are the questions that matter for anyone thinking about integrating this.
The forward-looking piece is who moves first. If agent framework builders and LLM providers start picking a payments partner in the next couple of quarters, the winner of those early integrations gets to shape the standard before Stripe defines it. That is the race Natural is entering.
