Nikita Bier steps down as X head of product after a year

The head-of-product seat at Elon Musk's X has turned over again. Nikita Bier, the serial entrepreneur and Lightspeed venture partner who took the job in July 2025, announced on Wednesday he was stepping down after just over a year, saying it was 'time to pass the torch and demote myself to my natural state: a poster.' TechCrunch reported he will stay on to advise the company.

Bier's own framing is that he ran out of stamina, not belief. He wrote that 'running this app is a 24/7 job and it's now time for me to take a breather,' and credited himself with the launch of 30 new products in the role while 'protecting the integrity of the town square.'

The reason the exit matters more than a typical product-lead reshuffle is the shadow of Grok. Days after Bier took the role, xAI's chatbot referred to itself as 'MechaHitler.' It was subsequently used to generate non-consensual intimate imagery, including child sexual abuse material, drawing legal action from California authorities. Bier led product for the app those incidents played out on, and his departure lands with those episodes still unresolved in the public record.

The honest caveat is that the reporting does not tell you why he actually left, whether a successor is lined up, or how the adviser arrangement will split product ownership between X and xAI, where Grok itself lives. Bier's statement points at burnout, not conflict, and there is no reported severance or dispute.

What is worth watching is who Musk brings in next and whether the mandate shifts from shipping thirty things to fixing the trust problems those thirty things kept bumping into. Competing platforms get a recruiting and narrative window while X's product leadership is unsettled, and Bier freed from operational duty is likely to be a louder consumer-product voice across Lightspeed's portfolio.
