Nscale IPO Pushback: Investors Urge $16B-$19B vs $30B Target

AI Infrastructure Chips ai-business

TL;DR

  • A cohort of investors is urging Nscale to price its US IPO at $16B-$19B, versus the roughly $30B valuation the company is seeking.
  • Microsoft canceled a 23,000-GPU deal at Nscale's Essex site, and the Norwegian flagship runs 6.4 MW against a 30 MW target.
  • Microsoft and Anthropic together account for about 85% of Nscale's $103B contract pipeline, concentrating anchor-tenant risk.

Nscale is seeking around $30 billion in its US IPO, and a cohort of would-be investors want to cut that nearly in half. Bloomberg reports that 'a cohort of investors have lately urged that a valuation in the $16 billion to $19 billion range would be more likely to find favor with buyers,' citing operational slippage at the British AI cloud operator and a chilled market for neocloud listings.

The problem list is concrete. Microsoft canceled a plan to rent 23,000 GPUs at Nscale's Essex site after authorities signaled the facility might not get a grid connection until the 2030s. The flagship Norwegian data center is six months behind schedule, running 6.4 MW against a 30 MW target. And Microsoft plus Anthropic together account for about 85% of Nscale's $103 billion contract pipeline, which turns the Essex loss into a dent in both revenue and anchor-tenant signaling.

The listing window is also hostile. CoreWeave, the closest listed comparable, had the stock's worst week since November with a 25% drop. Australian data-center firm Firmus scrapped its own IPO after the deal failed to garner enough support for the marketed share price.

The $30 billion number is not arbitrary on Nscale's side. In September the company raised $3.36 billion in pre-IPO convertible notes led by Third Point, including a $1 billion commitment from Nvidia expected to fund in mid-November, and the conversion is capped at a $30 billion valuation. That cap is now the ceiling the book is marketing against. Nscale filed its S-1 on September 18 and plans to list on the NYSE under the ticker NSCL, seeking to raise as much as $3 billion.

Our tracker already carried a separate alert on Microsoft's exit from the Essex deal today, and a wider Information piece in which industry executives said only seven to ten of the hundreds of neoclouds are likely to survive. Nscale is the first large one trying to price into that sentiment.
