Nvidia pledges $250m in UK compute for AI safety research

TL;DR

  • Nvidia committed $250 million (about £189m) in compute to UK agentic AI safety research over five years, roughly $50 million annually.
  • The pledge is GPU access routed through UK-based Nvidia Cloud Partners, not cash, split across Oxford's BOLD, UCL's SOFAIR and Imperial College London.
  • Research priorities named by Nvidia include secure agents, open-model security and real-world threat mitigations.

Nvidia will provide $250 million worth of compute, about £189 million, to UK researchers working on agentic AI safety over the next five years, delivered as GPU access through UK-based Nvidia Cloud Partners rather than paid as cash, according to the Guardian.

The commitment works out to roughly $50 million a year and is split across three academic programmes: the British Open-Ended Learning and Discovery Lab (BOLD) at the University of Oxford, the Science of Fundamental AI Research Lab (SOFAIR) at UCL, and Imperial College London's Frontier AI Research Lab, which will concentrate on safety engineering and robotics. Nvidia says the work will focus on secure agents, open-model security and real-world threat mitigations.

"AI capability and safety must advance together," said Jensen Huang, Nvidia's founder and chief executive. "The U.K. brings world-class scientific rigor to this essential engineering challenge."

UK AI Minister Kanishka Narayan called the pledge "a vote of confidence in our world-leading strength and expertise in AI research."
