Nvidia Ties Southeast Asia NCP Status to Chip Location Tracking
TL;DR
- Nvidia is now requiring Southeast Asian customers seeking Nvidia Cloud Partner (NCP) status to enroll in its Fleet Intelligence system, Bloomberg reports.
- Fleet Intelligence, launched nearly a year ago, tracks the precise physical location of AI accelerators and other operational metrics.
- US officials believe Chinese firms have bought billions of dollars of banned Nvidia processors through Southeast Asian smuggling networks.
Nvidia is making enrollment in its Fleet Intelligence tracking system a condition of Nvidia Cloud Partner (NCP) status for cloud operators in Southeast Asia, Bloomberg reported. The program logs the precise physical location of AI accelerators, along with other operational metrics, on hardware owned by participating companies.
The mandate "applies to all Southeast Asian customers seeking the partner designation, according to people familiar with the matter."
Fleet Intelligence launched nearly a year ago, originally pitched as a data-center management tool. The NCP label is the lever: it carries Nvidia's public endorsement and preferred access to its most sought-after chips, and losing it hurts. Earlier this year Nvidia had already cut roughly half of its pre-approved Asian buyers and told cloud firms to limit sales to Chinese clients.
The backdrop is a US-led view that Chinese buyers have procured billions of dollars of banned Nvidia processors through smuggling networks running through the region. In March, Super Micro Computer co-founder Wally Liaw was arrested in a case involving roughly $2.5 billion in chips, and prosecutors filed a separate $300 million indictment against Earthmade Computer Inc.
Nvidia's public posture is that it already watches its own fleet. Jensen Huang has described meetings with Megaspeed International, a startup founded in 2023 and flagged in smuggling reporting, as "completely normal," and the company says it is "confident that if the U.S. government believes that any person is a threat to American industry, it would let us know." The expansion is part of a dense week of chip-policy stories on our tracker, including Taiex's record drop and YMTC's domestic-tool push in Wuhan.
