Nvidia Weighs Guaranteeing Billions in Nscale Debt for Anthropic

TL;DR

  • Nvidia has layered roughly $170B in credit support and investments across neocloud customers, turning contingent liabilities into a structural balance-sheet exposure.
  • The proposed second 460MW phase would double Anthropic's footprint at Monarch, but the deal is unsigned and terms remain fluid.
  • Nscale grew from $100M to $103B in contracted value in roughly 2.5 years, one of the fastest infrastructure buildouts on record.

Nvidia is in talks to guarantee billions of dollars of debt that Nscale would raise to build a second 460-megawatt phase of its Monarch campus in West Virginia, a facility Anthropic plans to use, The Information reported on October 29.

The first 460 MW at Monarch is already spoken for. It anchors Anthropic's six-year, roughly $45 billion compute deal with Nscale, signed in August 2026. That capacity is expected to come online in late 2027 on Nvidia's upcoming Vera Rubin chips. A second block of the same size, which the proposed guarantee would help finance, would double Anthropic's footprint at the site. The size of the credit support has not been disclosed, nothing has been signed and the terms could still change.

One line in the reporting captures the geometry plainly: Nvidia "already sells the chips and owns a stake in the landlord. Now it may co-sign the mortgage too." This would not be a first. Nvidia guaranteed roughly $860 million of Nscale's Texas lease obligations in October 2025.

The exposure total is now the number worth looking at. Nvidia disclosed as much as $164.5 billion in customer-support commitments in its July 2026 10-Q, and press accounts place the total "on the line" for neoclouds above $170 billion once direct investments and equity stakes are counted. Nscale itself showed $103.4 billion in total contracted value in a September 18 S-1 against $2.6 billion in active revenue, after closing roughly $3 billion in senior secured delayed-draw term loan facilities in August.

On Nvidia's willingness to keep writing those checks, Jensen Huang has been direct. "The demand for the neoclouds is off the charts. Their capabilities are extraordinary," he said recently.
