Nvidia's $171.5B Neocloud Backstop Faces First Real Market Test
TL;DR
- Nvidia's exposure to AI cloud providers totals roughly $171.5 billion: $7 billion in direct investment plus $164.5 billion in guarantees and commitments.
- CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN are all down at least 30% in October; CoreWeave's five-year CDS spread has pushed past 11% to 1,115 basis points.
- Nvidia has committed to buy up to $6.3 billion of CoreWeave compute if the company cannot find another taker.
Nvidia's exposure to the AI cloud providers it has been bankrolling now runs to roughly $171.5 billion: $7 billion invested directly, plus $164.5 billion in guarantees and commitments, CNBC reports.
The three neoclouds Nvidia has leaned on hardest, CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN, are all "down at least 30% this month." CoreWeave, the biggest of the group, has seen the spread on its five-year credit default swaps "soar past 11%," up 171% this year and 36% in the past month, to 1,115 basis points. Its bond yields have topped 15%.
The CoreWeave arrangement is unusually direct. Nvidia's investment there includes equity and "a commitment to buy up to $6.3 billion of its compute if it can't find another taker." That is a buyer of last resort, not a passive stake.
Nebius fell even after announcing a $3.5 billion financing facility from Citi to pay for data center build-out and GPUs. The sell-off is landing on the single most-tracked AI name on our radar, with Nvidia running 209 stories across the past 90 days and the broader AI infrastructure beat at 452 over the same window.
