ONS Ties UK July GDP Beat to AI-Linked Programming Boom

Britain's output rose 0.4% in July, beating a City consensus that had expected zero growth, according to figures published by the Office for National Statistics and covered by Bloomberg. Within the print, computer programming, consultancy and related activities grew 3.5% on the month and contributed 0.12 percentage points to real GDP.

Liz McKeown, the ONS's director of economic statistics, put the AI industry directly in the frame. "Within services, computer programming was the largest contributor, continuing the strong growth seen throughout the year, with evidence that businesses involved with AI and related technologies helped to boost this sector," she said.

The ONS added that many of the businesses reporting the largest turnover in July across computer programming, consultancy and information services activities are involved in AI and cloud computing. On the rounded monthly figures, programming accounts for roughly 30% of the entire July gain.

The picture is not uniformly bright. Britain's two-year jobs market downturn has lasted as long as the slump seen during the global financial crisis as firms cut costs and turn to artificial intelligence. The ONS also says it cannot measure the AI effect directly, only that AI and cloud firms feature heavily among its top earners.
