OpenAI Acquires Presentation Startup NextSlide for ChatGPT

OpenAI's presentation ambitions just got a small but pointed piece of infrastructure. TechCrunch reported on August 8 that the company has acquired NextSlide, a startup whose product turned prompts, notes, documents, or research into polished, editable presentations. The whole team is joining OpenAI to work on ChatGPT, and financial terms were not disclosed.

The person to watch is the founder, Ahmed Beshry. He announced the deal on LinkedIn, noting the news came out 'a few months late' because the acquisition itself closed earlier this year. Beshry previously co-founded Caper AI, the cashier-less checkout startup that Instacart acquired for $350 million in 2021, so this is not a first-time founder taking a small offer. Read that as a signal about how OpenAI is buying, team-plus-product for a specific slot inside ChatGPT rather than a general talent grab.

Why this matters if you are not tracking OpenAI's org chart: presentation authoring is a productivity surface ChatGPT has not owned natively. Folding in a team that already built prompt-to-deck gives the company a purpose-built starting point instead of a bolt-on.

The honest caveat is that the reporting is thin. Terms are undisclosed, the announcement is retroactive by several months, and there is no public timeline for when presentation features actually show up in ChatGPT, or what happens to NextSlide's standalone product and any customers on it. Beshry's own line about continuing to build 'AI products that help people create, communicate' is a mission statement, not a roadmap.

The interesting question is not the acquisition itself but the direction. If a native slide generator lands inside ChatGPT in coming quarters, the office suite fight stops being purely about model quality and starts being about which surface a knowledge worker already has open.
