OpenAI Adds 'Try On' Button to ChatGPT, Powered by Images 2.5

TL;DR

  • OpenAI globally launched two ChatGPT shopping features on October 1, 2026: a virtual clothing try-on and a Favorites library.
  • The try-on takes a user selfie or full-body photo and renders clothing or accessories from shopping results onto the image.
  • Both features run on a new ChatGPT Images 2.5 model that OpenAI says improves lighting, textures, and image latency.

OpenAI dropped a "Try On" button into ChatGPT's shopping results on Thursday. Upload a selfie or full-body photo and the chatbot renders clothes or accessories onto the image. You can also hand it a screenshot of an item from a website and ask it to put the garment on you.

A companion feature, Favorites, lets users "save products you discover to a Library in the app" to come back to later, stored next to the generated try-on images.

Both run on a newly launched ChatGPT Images 2.5 model, which OpenAI claims "produces more natural lighting and richer textures, follows editing instructions more reliably, and reduces image generation latency," TechCrunch's Sarah Perez reports. The rollout is global.

This is OpenAI's second commerce swing inside ChatGPT after an earlier instant-checkout feature underperformed. Google launched its own virtual try-on last year, and the piece places ChatGPT in the same fashion-discovery lane as Google Shopping and Pinterest. It is also the fourteenth image-generation launch on our AI Photo tracker in the last 90 days.
