OpenAI Buys Orchestra Bio, Folds Drug-Dev Agents Into Rosalind
TL;DR
- OpenAI acquired four-year-old Orchestra Bio, whose "agentic operating layer" lets scientists delegate study monitoring and timeline tracking to AI agents.
- Financial terms were undisclosed; Orchestra had raised about $20 million as of 2025 from Andreessen Horowitz, Atria and 8VC.

OpenAI has acquired Orchestra Bio, a four-year-old biotech software startup whose "agentic operating layer" lets scientists delegate tasks like monitoring studies, tracking drug-development timelines and identifying potential delays to AI agents. The company shared the deal exclusively with Axios on Tuesday. Financial terms were not disclosed; Orchestra had raised around $20 million as of 2025 from Andreessen Horowitz, Atria and 8VC.
The team and technology are being folded into Rosalind, OpenAI's suite of AI models and tools for life-sciences research. OpenAI introduced the GPT-Rosalind model in April, and the related Rosalind Workbench, which helps researchers plan experiments and analyze results, already counts Moderna and Novo Nordisk as customers, according to TechCrunch.
"We've acquired Orchestra Bio, a platform that helps biopharma teams coordinate the complex process of drug development," OpenAI said in its announcement, framing the goal as to "streamline those operations and help new treatments reach patients." The company notes that developing a new medicine typically takes 10 to 15 years.
The acquisition lands six months after Anthropic bought Coefficient Bio for roughly $400 million and launched Claude Science in June, part of what Yahoo Finance frames as both labs "pushing into science as they look to expand beyond their core competencies in coding and cybersecurity." It is OpenAI's latest move in a very active week on our OpenAI tracker, which has logged 395 stories over the past 90 days.
