OpenAI drops 700 AI math preprints; mathematicians object
TL;DR
- OpenAI posted more than 700 AI-generated math preprints to GitHub on October 6, 2026, written by an unreleased internal model.
- The release covers 372 sets of results in geometry, algebra and computer science from roughly 4,000 problems the model was pointed at.
- None of the papers solved any of the five remaining Millennium Prize Problems, and three preprints have since been withdrawn.
OpenAI posted more than 700 AI-generated mathematics preprints to GitHub on October 6, written by an unreleased internal model that had been pointed at roughly 4,000 problems. The company told Nature its goal was to "evaluate and develop our models against difficult frontier problems in all sciences." None of the papers solved any of the five remaining Millennium Prize Problems.
The release covered 372 sets of results in geometry, algebra and computer science. Mathematicians were not uniformly impressed. Alvaro Lozano-Robledo, a number theorist at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, called the simultaneous release "staggering" and asked, "Why is OpenAI trying to solve hundreds of math problems to be released all at once?" Ursula Martin, a mathematician at the University of Oxford, described the strategy as "tossing the community a messy first draft and expecting us to clean it up for them." Michael Harris, a number theorist at Columbia University in New York City, told Nature he "can't bring myself to spend my time studying [these preprints]."
Reactions split along the frontier-lab fault line. Levent Alpöge, a mathematician at Anthropic in San Francisco, called the moment "the most significant moment in mathematical history" while acknowledging there would be "sad stories" for researchers whose projects were preempted. A group letter circulating on social media put the sharper read: "Releasing over 700 files at once is not a demonstration of scholarship, but a demonstration of power."
Three of the preprints have since been pulled.
