OpenAI is in early talks to acquire Trail of Bits, a New York software security firm that finds and fixes vulnerabilities in open-source projects, The Information reported. The size of a potential deal could not be learned.
Founded in 2012, Trail of Bits has more than 40 employees. The two companies have been working together since June, when they launched Patch the Planet, which pairs OpenAI's Codex and GPT-5.5-Cyber models with Trail of Bits engineers to hunt bugs across open-source libraries. "In one week, we used Codex and GPT-5.5-Cyber to find hundreds of bugs inside OSS like cURL, Python, and the Go project. 37 patches merged, with more in flight," Trail of Bits wrote on X at the launch.
OpenAI is "attempting to build a sizable cybersecurity business," per the reporting. The push lands in a week when the company has otherwise been in security headlines for less flattering reasons, including the arrest of a Saudi OpenAI engineer over a USB recorder found in an executive conference room.
