Paul Christiano Joins OpenAI Foundation Board and Safety Committee, Warns of 'Catastrophic' AI Acceleration

OpenAI announced that alignment researcher Paul Christiano is joining the OpenAI Foundation board and its Safety and Security Committee, which has final authority over model releases including Astra. Christiano — who founded the Alignment Research Center and advises the US Center for AI Standards and Innovation — wrote that he sees 'a meaningful risk that rapid acceleration in AI capabilities leads to catastrophic and irreversible loss of control,' specifically flagging AI systems training subsequent AI models. He will recuse himself from OpenAI matters at CAISI.
