Pentagon adds ChatGPT Mil and Grok to GenAI.mil, skips Claude

The Department of Defense on Monday put OpenAI's ChatGPT Mil and xAI's Grok for Government onto GenAI.mil, the Pentagon's central AI portal, joining Google Gemini and opening the tools to the department's 3 million civilian and military personnel. TechCrunch reported the platform has already onboarded more than 1.7 million unique users since launching nine months ago.

ChatGPT Mil is accredited for CUI at Impact Level 5, a DoD cloud-security standard for certain sensitive unclassified information. The Pentagon said the tool will support "chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs" for "administrative tasks, logistics, planning, and policy" and "document-heavy, routine unclassified work." Grok for Government, the department said, will "provide the warfighter with immediate productivity gains, stronger knowledge continuity and more secure and efficient collaboration," with uses ranging from "market research analysis for acquisition professionals to supply-chain management for logisticians."

Adding multiple models, the department said, would "help eliminate vendor lock-in and promote a broader American AI ecosystem."

One vendor is conspicuously absent. Anthropic's Claude is not on the portal. The Trump administration labeled Anthropic a supply-chain risk after CEO Dario Amodei refused to give the Pentagon unrestricted use of the company's AI tools and "insisted on certain safety guardrails," over concerns the products could be used for mass surveillance of Americans or autonomous weapons.
